From Basic to Bold: The Evolution of the Desk
Initially, our client’s request was for a basic walnut desk. However, as we collaborated, the design evolved into a bold, precision-engineered statement piece. Each revision reflected a growing trust in our process and capabilities.

Adjustable Drafting Surface with Gas Springs
We used 3/8” acrylic framed in aluminum for the drafting board. This construction ensures durability and prevents bowing under pressure. Thanks to Camloc Stop and Stay gas springs, the board is fully adjustable. It stops and holds at any angle, delivering personalized ergonomic support. When closed, the board sits flush with the desk’s surface for a seamless look. Moreover, the drafting table board on this custom desk is massive with dimensions of 24″ x 36″ (610 mm x 914 mm).
Thoughtful Storage Solutions
Each drawer of the Curly Maple Drafting Desk includes soft-close slides, adding a touch of quiet luxury. Large side cabinets offer generous storage, while slide-out acrylic trays make organizing easy. We also used adjustable acrylic shelving to provide flexible options for the client’s evolving needs. Moreover, we custom crafted a lattice “diamond bin” inside one of the cabinets. This is a great storage solution for our client’s rolls of vinyl stock for crafting.
Built-In Power and Hidden Surprises in this Custom Desk
Incorporated within the desk is a recessed power hub. It features USB-A and USB-C ports, delivering modern charging convenience without disrupting the design.
Lastly, we crafted a hidden drawer into this custom desk. With a gentle push, it reveals a concealed storage space—one final detail that delighted our client. (The picture below shows a glimpse of where it is located.)
Unlocking Curly Maple's Beauty: Our Finishing Process
Curly Maple, also known as fiddleback maple, tiger maple, or flamed maple, is celebrated for its striking three-dimensional figure. The undulating grain patterns create a dramatic visual effect when properly finished.
A Finish Inspired by Halloween
For this piece, our client requested a bold, Halloween-inspired theme. We applied a deep black aniline dye to intensify the wood’s figure, then sanded it back to enhance depth. We repeated this process repeated twice before applying a vibrant purple tone. The layers of color add dimension and intrigue.
Enhancing the Figure with Dye and Lacquer
After drying, we lightly burnished the wood and applied a durable lacquer top coat. As lighting or viewing angles change, the desk shifts in appearance. The result is a mesmerizing finish that reflects both light and personality.
